| Founder of the Order of Friars Preachers, born in Calaruega, Old Castile. He studied at Palencia, where he acquired such a name for piety and learning that he was made a canon in 1193. He led a life of rigorous asceticism, and devoted himself to missionary work, notably among the Albigenses of S France. His preaching order was approved by Pope Honorius III in 1216. By the time of his death, his order occupied 60 houses, and had spread as far as England, where from their dress the friars were called Black Friars. He was canonized in 1234 by Gregory IX. Feast day 8 August. |
