| biography:
| Greek theologian, born in Alexandria. A pupil of Origen, he succeeded him as head of the catechical school in Alexandria in 231. He became Bishop of Alexandria in 247. In the persecutions under Decius he escaped to a refuge in the Libyan desert, but was restored at the death of Decius in 251. He was banished again in 257, under Valerian, but returned in 261. Only fragments of his writings have survived. Feast day 17 November. |
