| Pope (366–84), possibly of Spanish descent. A Roman deacon, his election was violently contested, but confirmed by Valentinian I. He opposed Arianism, and condemned Apollinaris the Younger at the Council of Constantinople in 381. In 382 he proclaimed the primacy of the see of Rome. He commissioned St Jerome, his secretary, to undertake the Vulgate version of the Bible. Feast day 11 December. |
