| Theologian, one of the Fathers of the Church, born in Alexandria, N Egypt. He became Patriarch of Alexandria in 412, and vigorously implemented orthodox Christian teaching. He expelled the Jews from the city (415), and relentlessly persecuted Nestorius, whose doctrine was condemned at the Council of Ephesus (431). Feast day 9 June (E) or 27 June (W). |
