| biography:
| One of the great Fathers of the Church, probably born in Carthage. He became a Christian c.245, and was made Bishop of Carthage in 248, when his zealous efforts to restore strict discipline brought him a host of enemies. He was forced to flee from Roman persecution, and eventually suffered martyrdom under Valerian (reigned 253–60). At a synod in Carthage in 256 he argued for a notion of Church unity as expressed through the consensus of bishops. His writings remained influential. Feast day 16 September. |
