| Missionary, born in Ireland or Northumbria. He became a monk (651), prior of Melrose (661), and prior of Lindisfarne (664). In 676 he left to become a hermit, but in 684 was persuaded to take the bishopric of Hexham, then of Lindisfarne. After two years he returned to his cell, on the island of Farne, where he died. His body was moved to many places, and finally buried at Durham in 999. Feast day 20 March. |
