| biography:
| Christian martyr, and patron saint of music. According to tradition, she was a Roman maiden of patrician birth compelled to marry a young pagan, Valerian, despite a vow of celibacy. She succeeded in persuading him to respect her vow, and converted him to Christianity. They were both put to death for their faith. Later tradition made her a singer, hence her association with music-making. Feast day 22 November. |
