| Traditionally, a virgin of royal descent in Alexandria. She publicly confessed the Gospel at a sacrificial feast appointed by Emperor Maximinus, and was beheaded, after being tortured on a spiked wheel (later known as a catherine wheel). Her remains were miraculously spirited to Mt Sinai, where her shrine is on display in St Catherine's monastery. Feast day 25 November. |
