| biography:
| Clergyman, the founder of the Carthusian order, born in Cologne, W Germany. He became rector of the cathedral school at Reims, but withdrew in 1084 to the wild mountains of Chartreuse, near Grenoble. Here with six friends he founded the austere Carthusian order on the site of the present Grande Chartreuse. In 1091, at the invitation of Pope Urban II, he established a second Carthusian monastery at Della Torre in Calabria. Feast day 6 October. |
