| Anglo-Saxon missionary, the apostle to the Frisians, born in Northumbria, England, a pupil of St Wilfrid at Ripon. In c.690 he went with 11 companions to convert the Frisians. Created bishop and later (395) archbishop by Pope Sergius I, he based his see in Utrecht in an area allocated him by Pepin II of the Franks. After an interruption on Pepin's death, he was reinstated by Charles Martel. He baptized Pepin III in 714, and was aided by Boniface on a visit to Thuringia. He founded the abbey of Echternach (700) and was buried there. Feast day 7 November. |
