| biography:
| A monk from the Celtic monastery on the island of Iona, born in Ireland. He was summoned in 635 by King Oswald of Northumbria to evangelize the North. He established a church and monastery on the island of Lindisfarne, and was appointed the first bishop there. He later founded several churches throughout Northumbria. Feast day 31 August. |
