| biography:
| Christian virgin martyr, the patron saint of artillerymen, probably from Nicomedia, Bithynia. According to legend, which seems to have no foundation in historic fact, she was a maiden of great beauty whose father immured her in a tower to discourage suitors. On discovering that she had become a Christian, her father beheaded her, and was instantly struck by lightning. Her emblem is a tower. Feast day 4 December. |
