| biography:
| Christian theologian and prelate, born in Alexandria. A distinguished participant at the Council of Nicaea (325), he was chosen Patriarch of Alexandria and Primate of Egypt. As a result of his stand against the heretic Arius, he was dismissed from his see on several occasions by emperors sympathetic to the Arian cause. However, his teaching was supported after his death at the Council of Constantinople (381). His writings include works on the Trinity, the Incarnation, and the divinity of the Holy Spirit. The Athanasian Creed (representing his beliefs) was little heard of until the 7th-c. Feast day 2 May. |
