| biography:
| Monk, born in Lisbon, Portugal. At first an Augustinian monk, in 1220 he entered the Franciscan order, and became one of its most active propagators. He was canonized by Gregory IX (c.1170–1241) the year after his death. According to legend, he preached to the fishes when people refused to listen to him; hence he is the patron of the lower animals, and is often shown accompanied by an ass. He is also the patron saint of lost property. Feast day 13 June. |
