| Roman soldier, venerated as the first Christian martyr in Britain. A pagan Romano-Briton living in the town of Verulamium (now St Albans), he was scourged and beheaded in the 3rd-c or early 4th-c for sheltering and changing clothes with a fugitive Christian priest who had converted him. Feast day 22 June. |
