| biography:
| Missionary and abbot, born in Gartan, Co Donegal, N Ireland. He founded monasteries at Derry (546), and Durrow (553), and then at Iona, in the Inner Hebrides (c.563), from where he and his followers brought Christianity to Scotland. In his system, bishops were subordinate to abbots, and Easter was kept on a different day from the Roman churches. He is said to have copied 300 books with his own hand. Feast day 9 June. |
