| biography:
| Irish statesman. He studied at Trinity College Dublin, and was called to the bar in 1975. He became a member of the Dáil in 1981, and quickly rose to be leader of the Labour Party (1981–97) and deputy prime minister (1982–7, 1993–7). He was minister of state in the departments of justice (1981–2), the environment (1982–3), and energy (1983–7), and became well known abroad following his appointment as minister for foreign affairs (1993–7). He remains an MP. |
