biography: British statesman and prime minister (1809–12), born in London, UK. He studied at Cambridge, was called to the bar (1786), and became an MP in 1796. He was solicitor general (1801), attorney general (1802), and Chancellor of the Exchequer (1807), before becoming premier. An efficient administrator, his Tory government was firmly established when he was shot while entering the lobby of the House of Commons by a bankrupt Liverpool broker, John Bellingham, who was later hanged for the murder.
