| Painter and textile designer, born in Ukraine. Brought up in St Petersburg, she studied art at Karlsruhe and in Paris where, in 1905, she attended the Académie de la Palette. In 1909 she made a marriage of convenience with the art critic Wilhelm Uhde, but that ended shortly, and in 1910 she married the French painter Robert Delaunay and together they founded the movement known as Orphism. In 1918 they designed sets and costumes for Diaghilev. She was a textile designer of international importance, and her work was included in the Exposition des Arts Décoratifs in 1925. |
