| biography:
| Sri Lankan (Ceylonese) statesman and prime minister (1956–9), born in Colombo, W Sri lanka. He studied at Oxford, and was called to the bar in 1925. He became president of the Ceylon National Congress, then helped to found the United National Party, which formed the government of Ceylon in 1948–56. In 1951 he resigned from the government and organized the Sri Lanka Freedom Party, which returned him to parliament as Leader of the Opposition, and in 1956 he became prime minister on a policy of nationalization and neutralism. He was assassinated by a Buddhist monk. |
