| Cultural anthropologist, born in Chicago, Illinois, USA. Educated at the universities of Wisconsin and Chicago (1935 PhD), he carried out field studies among the North American, Guatemalan, and Mexican Indians, and had a long career as a professor of anthropology at Chicago. As a longtime associate at the Wenner-Gren Foundation for Anthropological Research, he promoted many expeditions and field campaigns. His publications include Evolution after Darwin (3 vols, 1960), and he was editor of American Anthropologist (1953–6). |
