| biography:
| Lawyer, diplomat, and businessman, born in Trenton, New Jersey, USA. He studied at Cornell University Law School, then worked in the Office of Price Administration in Washington, and in the Office of the General Council Navy Dept. He joined the Xerox Corporation and became its chairman (1958–66), and in 1969 became a senior partner with an international law firm. In the 1970s he co-negotiated the Panama Canal Treaties of 1977, and was personal ambassador for President Carter during the Middle East negotiations (1979–81). In 1998 he received the Presidential Medal of Freedom from President Clinton. |
