| biography:
| Pope, born in Grottammare, Marche, E Italy. A former Franciscan preacher, he became pope in 1585. He set out to improve the Papal States' finances by promoting commercial development and selling offices, and actively suppressed brigandage. A strong supporter of the Counter-Reformation, he reorganized the church's central administration. He sided with Philip II of Spain against the English, but later on supported Henry IV of France against Spain. In Rome he was responsible for building, among others, St Peter's dome and the Lateran palace, and for siting the Obelisk in the Piazza del Popolo (1589). |
