| Jurist, administrator, and writer, born in St Kilda, Melbourne, Victoria, SE Australia. After serving in World War 2 with the Royal Australian Navy, he studied law at Oxford University, and became a fellow of Oriel College in 1947. From 1951 he was professor of public law at Melbourne University, and in 1967 was appointed emeritus professor. He was Vice-Chancellor of the University of New England, New South Wales (1967–70) and of Queensland University (1970–7). Knighted in 1976, he succeeded Sir John Kerr as Governor-General of Australia (1977–82). He then became provost of Oriel College, Oxford (1982–90) and Pro-Vice-Chancellor of Oxford (1988–90), and also served as chairman of the UK Press Council (1983–8). |
