| biography:
| Civil aviation pioneer, born in Launceston, Tasmania, Australia. He served with the Australian Flying Corps in World War 1. He established the Queensland and Northern Territory Aerial Services Limited in 1920, now known as QANTAS. In 1931 he was involved in the pioneering Australia–England airmail flights, which led to the formation of Qantas Empire Airways as a joint venture with Imperial Airways of the UK. In 1947 Qantas was acquired by the Australian government. Fysh became managing director, was knighted in 1953, and retired as chairman in 1966. He was a notable aviation historian, and wrote a number of books on the early days of civil aviation. |
