| British soldier, born in Welbourn, Lincolnshire, EC England, UK. He enlisted as a private in 1877 and rose to be field marshal in 1920. In World War 1 he was quarter-master general (later chief of general staff) of the British Expeditionary Force, and became Chief of the Imperial General Staff (1915–18). He wrote his autobiography, From Private to Field-Marshal in 1921. |
