| biography:
| Lawyer and physicist, born in Swansea, SC Wales, UK. He graduated at Oxford in 1835, and became a barrister, then turned to electrochemistry, and taught physics. He returned to the law to improve his income, becoming a judge in 1871. In 1842 he made the first fuel cell, generating electric current from a chemical reaction using gases, and the first filament lamp (1845). He also published early ideas on energy conservation. Since 1991, the Grove Medal has been awarded to acknowledge an individual or company that has made valuable contributions to the development of fuel cell technology. |
