| Pacifist, born in Fareham, Hampshire, S England, UK. An active trade unionist, he was a strong advocate of British neutrality in the Franco-Prussian war, and founded the Workmen's Peace Association, the germ of the International Arbitration League. A radical MP from 1885, he edited the peace journal Arbitor from 1889. He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1903. |
