| Artist, born in Newark, Nottinghamshire, C England, UK, the father of Ben Nicholson. He studied in Paris and was influenced by Whistler and Manet. He became a fashionable portrait painter, but is principally remembered for the posters produced with his brother-in-law, James Pryde (1866–1941) under their joint-pseudonym of J and W Beggarstaff, for his woodcut book illustrations, and for his glowing still-life paintings (such as ‘Mushrooms’, Tate, London). |
