| Meteorologist, born in Birmingham, West Midlands, C England, UK. He was assistant director of the Cavendish Laboratory (1877–1906), director of the Meteorological Office, London (1907–20), and the first professor of meteorology at the Royal College of Science in 1920. He introduced the use of the millibar as a unit of atmospheric pressure, and helped to establish the ‘polar front’ theory of cyclones propounded by Bjerknes. He was knighted in 1915. |
