| Australian statesman, and prime minister (1968–71), born in Melbourne, Victoria, SE Australia. He studied at Oxford, and in 1940 joined the RAAF, but was seriously wounded, and discharged in 1944. He was a Liberal senator for Victoria (1949–68) and a member of the House of Representatives (1968–75). He served in the governments of Sir Robert Menzies and Harold Holt before becoming prime minister. In 1971 he was defeated on a vote of confidence, and resigned in favour of William McMahon, becoming deputy leader of his Party (until 1975). He was knighted in 1997. In 1993 he announced that he was to wed for the second time, at the age of 82. |
