| Archaeologist and Egyptologist, born in Charlton, Kent, SE England, UK. He surveyed Stonehenge (1874–7), but turned entirely to Egyptology from 1881, beginning by surveying the pyramids and temples of Giza and excavating the mounds of Tanis and Naucratis. The author of more than 100 books, renowned for his energy and spartan tastes, he became the first Edwards professor of archaeology at London (1892–1933), continuing excavations in Egypt and Palestine until well into his 80s. |
