| Orientalist, born in London, UK. He studied at Oxford, was called to the bar (1774), became a judge in the Supreme Court in Bengal (1783), and was knighted. He devoted himself to Sanskrit, whose resemblance to Latin and Greek he pointed out in 1787, thus motivating the era of comparative philology. |
