| biography:
| Chemist, born in London, UK. He studied chemistry at Finsbury Technical College and the Central Institution, London (Imperial College). He became head of chemistry at Goldsmith's College, London, then professor of chemistry at Manchester, and in 1908 at Cambridge. He demonstrated that in an optically active compound the asymmetric centres could be due to elements other than carbon. He also showed that compounds containing no asymmetric atoms could still be optically active. |
