| Music critic, born in London, UK. He studied at Cambridge, then studied the piano under Schnabel in Berlin. He joined The Observer in 1934 and became its chief music critic (1939–45), while also serving in the RAF. He was director of the Summer School at Dartington (1953–79), editor of the music magazine The Score (1949–61), and controller of music at the BBC (1959–72), where he devised the invitation concerts in which new works were performed amid more popular pieces. He was knighted in 1970. |
