| biography:
| British soldier, born in Chennai (formerly Madras), SE India. He trained at the Royal Military Academy, Woolwich, joined the Royal Engineers, and served in South Africa in the 2nd Boer War (1899–1902). He commanded in Malaya (1935–9), and was Governor of Malta (1940–2) during its resolute resistance to German and Italian air attack. |
