| biography:
| Artillery officer and scientist, born in London, UK. He studied at Woolwich Academy, and in 1808 invented the Congreve rocket, first used in the Napoleonic wars. He became comptroller of the Royal Laboratory of Woolwich Arsenal in 1818, and served as MP for Plymouth, Devon, from 1818 until his death. |
