| biography:
| Metallurgist, born in London, UK. In 1880 he was appointed professor at the Royal School of Mines, two years later becoming chemist and assayer at the Mint. A pioneer of alloy research, he demonstrated the possibility of diffusion occurring between a sheet of gold and a block of lead. He also invented the automatic recording pyrometer. He was knighted in 1899. |
