| biography:
| British economist, born in St Lucia. He was professor of economics at Manchester (1948–58), then became the first president of the University of the West Indies (1959–63). He served as an adviser to several African governments, and became the president of the Caribbean Development Bank, which he helped to establish (1970–4). From 1963 until his retirement in 1983 he held a chair in economics at Princeton. In 1979 he shared the Nobel Prize for Economics for work on economic development in the Third World. |
