| Historical painter, born in Edinburgh, EC Scotland, UK. In 1805 he went to St Petersburg, then spent several years in Russia and Turkey, painting scenes of Russian life. In 1841 he was appointed Queen's Limner (painter) in Scotland. His Scottish historical paintings include scenes from the novels of Sir Walter Scott. |
