| Scholar, born in Dundee, E Scotland, UK. He studied at St Andrews, and became professor of Anglo-Saxon at Oxford (1916–25), and of English at Chicago (1925–35). He was joint editor of the New English Dictionary (1901–33), and also editor of dictionaries on Scots and on American English. |
