| biography:
| Landscape painter, born in Hamburg, N Germany. He emigrated to Australia with his parents in 1884. He was sponsored by local businessmen for his tuition at the Adelaide School of Design, and his trip to Europe in 1899, where he studied in Paris and painted in Italy, The Netherlands, and the UK. Primarily a water-colourist, his first important exhibition was in Melbourne, in 1908, and his success grew during the following 20 years. He was knighted in 1959. |
