| Chemist, born in Chorley, Lancashire, NW England, UK. He studied at Manchester and Göttingen, and was professor of organic chemistry at Newcastle (1920–5) and Birmingham (1925–48). He determined the chemical structure of vitamin C and various carbohydrates, for which he shared the Nobel Prize for Chemistry in 1937. He was knighted in 1947. |
