| biography:
| Writer and critic, born in Ipswich, Suffolk, E England, UK. He studied in London, became a foreign newspaper correspondent in France, Morocco, and Spain, and published his first novel, Claire Drummer, in 1929. He became known for his critical works, such as The Living Novel (1946), short stories, and travel books. He was knighted in 1975, and also published two volumes of autobiography, A Cab at the Door (1968) and Midnight Oil (1973). He was made a Companion of Honour in 1993. |
