| biography:
| Physiologist and surgeon, born in London, UK. He was professor at the Royal Institution (1891–3), and professor of pathology at University College London (1893–6). He was the first to remove a spinal tumour. He distinguished himself by his work on the localization of brain function and the improvement of operative techniques to allow brain surgery; and he improved the treatment of myxoedema. He was knighted in 1902, and died of heatstroke on active service in Mesopotamia. |
