| biography:
| British soldier and astronomer, born in Largs, North Ayrshire, W Scotland, UK. At 16 he entered the army, and served with distinction in Flanders, the West Indies, Spain, and North America, being promoted major-general in 1813. He was Governor of New South Wales (1821–5). He catalogued 7385 stars, and received the Copley Medal from the Royal Society. Brisbane, the capital of Queensland, was named after him. |
