| Explorer, born in Craigend, Renfrewshire, W Scotland, UK. After service in the Peninsular War, from 1828 he became surveyor-general of New South Wales. In four expeditions (1831, 1835, 1836, 1845–7) he did much to explore eastern and tropical Australia, especially the Murray, Glenelg, and Barcoo rivers. |
