| Businessman and philanthropist, born in Glasgow, W Scotland, UK. After various jobs in the USA he returned to Glasgow, and in 1870 opened the first of his many prosperous grocery shops, which made him a millionaire by the age of 30. He bought tea plantations, rubber estates, factories and packing houses abroad, and many farms and factories at home, creating Lipton Ltd in 1898. A keen yachtsman, he challenged the America's Cup five times with his yachts Shamrock I–V, and made generous donations to charities. He was knighted in 1898 and created a baronet in 1902. |
