| biography:
| English diplomat and scholar, born in London, UK. After a short career as a soldier, including active service in China, he became a member of the diplomatic corps in China and was the British ambassador in Beijing (1871–83). In 1888 he was appointed the first professor of Chinese at Cambridge, holding this post until 1895. Among his works is the Peking Syllabary (1859), in which his own system of romanization is employed; this transliteration system was later modified by Wade's successor at Cambridge, Herbert Giles, and is now referred to as the Wade–Giles system. |
