| Pastoralist and wool-broking pioneer, born in Lochwinnoch, Renfrewshire, W Scotland, UK. He studied at Glasgow University, then settled in South Australia in 1854, where he joined the company established by a fellow Scot, Thomas Elder. The two men went into partnership under the style of Elder, Smith & Co to become one of the world's largest wool-brokers, with extensive pastoral holdings. Closely involved for many years with Adelaide University, he established the library there which bears his name. |
